Students are seated in ranks watching the teacher
explain an equation. Looking back on his class the
teacher notices Akane, she is beginning to break
down. Sobbing she apologizes to her lost self for
giving up. She begs for forgiveness. Toka looks on,
concerned. A red balloon rests on the ceiling of the
room.

Poom Poom is giving a voice over, saying
It's too late. now...
This is in response to the apologies made by all of
the various students who accepted a balloon. Sounds
kind of menacing. Cut to Saki standing before her
piano at home, she has just realized that she can no
longer play.

Not sure as to why but Sanada is running as if chased
by something that he fears(guilt?). He has let go of
his balloon and it is floating into the night sky.
Again Poom Poom in voice over.
Too late to recapture the things you've already
lost. You're the ones who left us behind, though.
Sanada has arrived home, he is in a sort of
destructive frenzy. He sets fire to everything around
him. He says
I can't put it out it hurts!
I don't think that he is referring to the fire
surrounding him. The pain in his heart maybe?
Desperately he asks what else he can burn to ausage
his pain.

from work. Flash to a grandfather clock. The time
shown is 1:30. Poom Poom is explaining his perplexity
where it comes to adults. It feels that they have
shed the most important aspect of themselves, and are
happy with their lot in life. Three stills of Poom
Poom on a street corner offering red balloons to
passers by. Their don't seem to be any takers, the
number of balloons he holds never decreases.

The phantom Akane is standing on a hilltop with Poom
Poom watching as Manaka plays with six other phantom
children. Akane asks Poom Poom if Manaka saved him.
It tells her yes that is why she is its best friend.
Looking to the crowd of children surrounding Manaka,
Poom Poom states that they to have strange powers(I
do not believe that he is referring to all of the
phantom children). He explains that the power they
have comes from the pain that they experienced while
growing into adulthood. Changing the subject Akane
decides to give the yet nameless Poom Poom his name.
He accepts it but is curious as to why she chose that
name.
Because you gave me a happy balloon.
They descend from the hilltop, rejoining Manaka and
the rest of the phantom children. As they walk Akane
tells Poom Poom the story of Poom Poom as described
in her books. She names each of the lands that the
fictional Poom Poom visited: Flower Country; Doll
Country; and Dinosaur Country. Manaka repeats the
words
Flower Country,
and releases countless butterflies. As the
butterflies pass out of Paisley Park the lights
gradually brighten. In the end the park looks as it
would if it had been completed. Poom Poom declares
This is our country. We were abandoned and left
behind. This will forever be our country!

someone is approaching, someone who's intentions are
unknown.

Nagi vaults the wall surrounding Paisley Park.
Beginning to walk through the park she hears a child
wailing. She sees a childlike Sanada crying beneath a
streetlight. Approaching, Nagi asks why he is in the
park. Sanada looks up at Nagi, his expression is
dark. Nagi's right shoulder bursts into flame. As she
watches more children appear around Sanada. Turning
away, Nagi flees, chased by a succession of fiery
explosions. The park's mirror house offers her refuge
from attack. The phantom children form up around the
building. They are ecstatic about the defeat of a
grown up.
Poom Poom has been watching the goings ons. Speaking
of Nagi he says
You're the coolest friend ever. Wait. I'll save
you... From the heart of darkness...
The children tell Poom Poom that they will get Nagi,
that they will beat her up. It tells them to stop.
Friends, it tells them are more important.

something strange has been happening in the city.
Akane, oblivious, asks that Toka come with her. Toka,
she says should meet someone(Poom Poom).

Toka is following Akane to Paisley Park. There is a
child, Akane explains, who wishes to have as many
friends as possible. Turning introspective, Akane asks
Toka what she would do to regain something that was
precious to her. Toka however has disappeared.

Nagi has shattered a mirror, trying to find a way out
of the fun house. Poom Poom and Manaka arrive. Nagi,
seeing their reflection in a mirror, turns. Poom Poom
apologizes for Nagi's ill treatment at the hands of
the phantom children. A balloon appears in its hand,
it asks that they be friends. Her eyes hard, Nagi
tells Poom Poom that it is the same as the Manticore.
Poom Poom sounding perplexed says that it is nothing
more than a memory of the things that adults abandon.
It tells her that she has come to the park for the
same reason as all of the others, to regain what she
has lost. Acording to Poom Poom, Nagi wishes become
friends more than any of the others. Nagi feigns
ignorance, saying that she does not know whom Poom
Poom is addressing. At this moment Manaka hits Nagi
with a barrage of memories.

Stone faced, Nagi watches as her memories play
back before her. Poom Poom is haranguing her, asking
why she conceals her pain. It tells her that she no
longer has to be alone and in pain. Again Nagi is
forced to watch her younger self sobbing over her
father's bloody corpse. Finally having enough she
snarls and puts her fist through another mirror. For
a moment Poom Poom says nothing. It lets go of the
balloon that it had offered Nagi.
Somberly it calls her a grown-up. Nagi runs for the
exit, and dives out into the park. Standing, she
looks around. Arrayed before her are all of the
phantom children and three enormous parade
balloons(elephant, clown, and cat). The children
speaking amongst themselves declare that they have
found a grown up. Nagi turns tail and runs for her
life. The children give chase.

Akane has returned to the park. She is looking out
over it from on top of the machinery that runs one of
the attractions. Talking to herself she states that
the she created this world(with her stories) and that
she wants to join and play with the others. She
begins to walk forward. In front of her some of the
park's machinery spins menacingly(I am not sure if
this is a conscious suicide attempt or not, I don't
believe that it is). Just as she is about to die, Nagi
grabs and wrenches her back from the threshold. Akane
struggles furiously to escape Nagi's grasp. She
quiets as the children who had been chasing Nagi
approach. At their fore walks Akane's phantom. It
stops and exchanges stares with its original. Akane
wilts beneath its gaze collapsing to her knees.
Sanada's phantom starts toward Nagi, intent it seems
on causing her harm. Somewhere Boogiepop starts to
whistle. Hearing the tune, the children stop and turn
around. They walk in the direction of the ferris
wheel. Akane shouts for them to stop and tries to
follow but Nagi again restrains her.

Manaka and Poom Poom are standing on a horizontal
spoke of the ferris wheel, Boogiepop is opposite of
them. Boogiepop addresses Manaka as a loose end that
has not been tied up. She, it says is the only person
who is still evolving. It starts to advance on Poom
Poom and Manaka. Manaka is shivering with fear.
Suddenly a dinosaur appears, and attacks Boogiepop.
It is nothing more than an illusion and promptly
disappears. Boogiepop continues to advance saying
that it has no phantom self that can be released by
Poom Poom's power. Aloud Boogiepop asks itself what
is to be done and continues to advance. Trying to
defend Manaka and Poom Poom Sanada attacks Boogiepop.
The attack is easily fended off. Trying to escape
Manaka begins to edge backwards, but missteps and
plummets to the ground. The phantom children surround
her fallen form. Poom Poom drops to the ground and
walks to where Manaka fell. Manaka's physical
appearance has changed dramatically, she now appears
to be an infirm 90 year old. Boogiepop who has also
dropped to the ground approaches as well. Boogiepop
seems to blame itself for all that has happened
following the Pillar of Light. Saying that it should
have noticed earlier. Without turning from Manaka
Poom Poom asks Boogiepop what it had done to Manaka,
and why it has been so mean to her. Calling her an
enemy of the world Boogiepop explains that she
created Poom Poom. Understanding that it too is
targeted by Boogiepop it tries to excuse what it had
been doing. Saying that it had merely been playing
with its friends. Poom Poom knowing that it is lying
to itself and Boogiepop starts to break down,
revealing its pain Poom Poom anguishes over its
abandonment by Akane and Mamoru. Manaka it explains
saved it from Mamoru's heart of darkness. Continuing
Manaka's work Poom Poom saved all of the phantom
children from their respective hearts of darkness.
Boogiepop tells Poom Poom it is still being
deceptive, that its motives are not noble. Its memory
was not cast aside or forgotten as it had stated,
that it is only the embodiment of regret. Poom Poom
blinds people to reality and makes them think that
they can recover portions of their lives that have
already been lost. Cut to several flashbacks.

Boogiepop derides Poom Poom, calling it an awful
piper. Poom Poom continues to reject all that
Boogiepop has said, saying that it just wanted to
have friends like itself. Boogiepop seeing nothing
childlike about Poom Poom claims that it has been
deceiving the phantom children. The children ask Poom
Poom if it is their friend, mournfully it tells them
no. Calling it a liar they fade away. Leaving only
Poom Poom, Manaka, and Boogiepop. No longer seeming
to deny that it had ruined many people's lives, Poom Poom
tries to make Boogiepop understand its alienation. It
and Manaka are a nexus of sorts for those who have
dreams or abilities that do not mesh with the
consensual reality that is society. Poom Poom tries
to make Boogiepop believe that revenge was not its
purpose. Finally it asks Boogiepop if its creation
was a mistake. Sounding less like an angel of death
and more like a parent, Boogiepop tells Poom Poom
that it and Manaka accidently formed a symbiotic
relationship. Without Manaka, Poom Poom would not
exist and without Poom Poom Manaka would have died of
old age. Effectively condemning Manaka to death Poom
Poom apologizes and then disappears. Dragging herself
towards Boogiepop Manaka lifts her her arm, seemingly
begging for mercy.

Akane is in seated at a desk in school. It seems that
the late Poom Poom has sent her a message. It tells
her that it has departed the world. Poom Poom also
leaves a warning, that should it return Akane's
friends should avoid it. Absent mindedly Akane has
written the words
Poom Poom
in her notebook. Toka sauntering to Akane's desk,
looks over her shoulder. She is curious as the the
meaning of the two words that have been written in
the notebook. Akane embraced tries to cover her
notebook. The camera pans to the classroom window, on
it is a glowing butterfly.
