Dr. Kisugi is talking to Shizue about how she reacted
to seeing her mother with someone other than her
father. Shizue has experienced some sort of mental
trauma that prevents her from being in anyway
intimate with others. This phobia horrifies Shizue,
sobbing she tell Dr. Kisugi that she wants to break
her conditioning. Dr. Kisugi tells her that if she
does not quit crying she will never overcome her
fear. Sounding very sure of herself Shizue declares
that she can do what it takes to overcome her fears.
Amused Dr. Kisugi asks why she is so confident.
Shizue replies that she had learned confidence after
she cut herself off from her mother, every day she
had holed up in her room and done nothing but study.
Her diligence resulted in better grades and
acceptance to her favored school. Dr. Kisugi
acknowledges this stating that maybe Shizue is strong
enough. Shizue has just signed her death sentence by
showing strength of character to Dr. Kisugi.
