Yoji has arrived home and is immediately accosted by
his father, who wishes to know how Yoji did on his
practice exam. Yoji ignores him and starts up the
stairs to his room. His father shouts after him that
all he wants is for Yoji to make it into a state

Yoji has closed and locked the door to his room. His
father has followed close behind. Through the door he
states that if Yoji is getting low test scores he
should try for easier schools. He asks that Yoji do
it for his parent's sake. Yoji continues to ignore
his father, saying to himself
who are you, I don't know you.
Seating himself in front of his computer Yoji inserts
a CD-ROM labeled Computer Graphics School. Yoji it
seems has been creating a dating sim. He is
infatuated with the simulated girl, going so far as
to lick the screen (this guy gives me the
creeps).

The restaurant where Yoji works is holding interviews
for additional help. The manager apparently has
placed a great deal of trust in Yoji as he is giving
the interviews. Yoji is interviewing Rie who
supposedly attends
Shinyo High School.
She can only work three days a week, so she is
doubtful about whether she will land the job. Yoji
tells her that she can work Monday, Wednesday, and
Friday. Intentionally placing her on all the days
that he works. She tells him that she will think
about it. As she is leaving Yoji tries to get her
attention but he speaks so softly that there is no
way that she would hear him.

Yogi is day-dreaming about how he will approach Rie.
Other pedestrians must think him insane, as his eyes
are glazed over and he is having full blown conversations
with himself. Mesmerized by the prospect of working
with Rie, Yoji drifts home. Sunami who wishes to
peddle Type-S approaches him. She tells him that he
always looks depressed, and that no one will pick him
up looking as he does. Yoji turns away but Sunami
blocks his path. Holding up a flask of Type-S she says
that it can help him change,

Yoji is typing on his computer as he gloats about how
perfect Rie is, and how she matches the bird boned
beauty of the girl in his game. He even goes so far
as to rename the female in his game Rie. When he is
done he stares at the bottle of Type-S that is
perched on the corner of the desk, he has yet to try
it. He puts a single drop of Type-S in the open flame
of an alcohol lamp, the flame turns red. In his minds
eye he can see Rie as a waitress. Yoji flops back on
his bed with Rie's application. Staring at her
picture Yoji asks that the drug Type-S give him the
courage to call her. When he calls her number he gets
an answering machine, Yoji tells the machine that Rie
can work whatever days she wishes.

The manager is opening the restaurant while Yoji is
inside prepping the kitchen. Standing in front of a
lit gas range Yoji puts a drop of Type-S in the
flame, hoping to gain courage. Daydreaming he sees
Rie holding her uniform in front of herself, saying
how cute it is.

Yoji is disposing of several female uniforms, still
in their wrappers. When Rie comes through the doorway
the reason becomes evident. The uniform that she has
been given is much too small. Yoji has forced this by
throwing away all of the uniforms that would better
suit her. She is obviously embarrassed, pulling on
the hem of her skirt, trying to make it ride lower.
Rie tells him that the uniform is too small, but fine
for now. Yoji looks back at her with hooded eyes.

Yoji is hiding in the bathroom. Perched on the toilet
he repeats to himself what he wishes he had said
to Rie, that she looked very nice dressed as she

Yoji is on his computer, chatting under the screen
name Begins(is this some sort of reference?). He is having a conversation with someone
who goes by the alias Trapper. Trapper wants to know
where Yoji got his supply of Type-S. Yoji is evasive,
saying only that he got it from My Fair Lady. Later
he records Rie's voice onto his computer so that the on screen character can use her voice.
The CG Rie's hair is pulled up tight against her
scalp, apparently something that Yoji likes. Speaking
into thin air he asks why the real Rie doesn't put
her hair up.

Rie, being an inexperienced server, is having a hard
time managing all of the plates that she must carry.
Yoji is looking on, he looks pleased that he may have
something to hold over her. After a hit of Type-S he
shows her the proper way to carry a customer's order.
Rie is suitably impressed. Yoji tells her that he
will instruct her.

once. Leaning over, Yoji whispers in her ear that he
found a hair in the rice. Mortified Rie apologizes saying that
she will be more careful. Yoji grins thinking about
the computer generated Rie putting up its hair. He
asks Rie if she can put her hair up, she agrees.

Rie, who has her hair up, is bringing dirty dishes to
Yoji. Almost in passing Yoji mentions to her that he
knows that she is only in Junior High. She asks how
he knows. Relentlessly he continues on asking what
the owner of the restaurant or her parents would say.
Turning she grasps him asking that he not say
anything. Yoji's expression is horrible to behold. He
believes that Rie is in the palm of his hand.

Yoji is relating the nights events to Trapper.
Apparently he had known that Rie was a Junior High
student back when she had given him her job
application. Rie had mistakenly called Shinyo Academy
Shinyo High School. A mistake no one who was
attending the school would make. This apparently puts
Rie in a tight spot as she is taking the test to get
into High School. After the end of the work day Yoji
had demanded that Rie keep her hair up. She had
little choice but to comply. Trapper is impressed by
how forward Yoji was, but repeates his request to know
where Yoji got Type-S.

Yoji has come to Sunami for more Type-S. She is
propped against the side of the alley burning some of
the Type-S that she brought for Yoji. She apologizes
for smoking his stuff. Seeming to realize his peril,
Yoji asks if he will end up like her if he continues
taking Type-S. Laughing Sunami tells him not to
worry. Holding out her hand she demands that he give
her the money.

choice about what she should eat has appeared on
screen. The three choices are pasta, cheesecake, and

A male patron is asking Rie when she works, she tells
him. Yoji, hunched over by the stove looks on. He
puts three drops of Type-S into the open flame.
Looking back over at Rie he sees her serving another
table, it is Toka and friends. They are discussing
Nagi, who apparently had recently been suspended. One
of the girls tells Toka that Nagi had been seen
loitering around the station. The other girl wonders
if maybe Nagi had been selling Type-S. Toka tells
them that Nagi is not the sort to do such a thing.
Yoji has been watching the three of them talk, under
his breath he calls them all ugly.

blurred together. He does not appear to know the
difference due to his addiction to Type-S.

is very vague instead sees the real Rie walking

home. He is torn from his daydreams though when he
spots Rie hanging from the arm of the boy she had
been talking to in the restaurant. Yoji collapses to
the pavement. Reaching for his flask of Type-S, he
finds that he has used all of it. Looking up he spots
Sunami, who looks pretty hard up herself stagger into
a nearby alley. Speaking for his own benifit he
demands that she give him Type-S.

Saotome is telling Sunami that she was never popular
or happy before, but she has been having fun.
Presumably because of Type-S. Saotome tells her that
she has had enough fun. The Manticore attacks and
then kills her. Kneeling over Sunami's corpse it
begins to feed. When it is done the Manticore stands,
it and Saotome notice Yoji braced against one wall of
the alley. Totally oblivious to the death of Sunami,
he demands that they give him more Type-S. The
Manticore defers to Saotome asking what he wants to
do. He tells it that everything is fine, as Yoji is
already their slave. Saotome wants to see what
happens to an addict that does not cease taking
Type-S. The Manticore posits that they should be
called perfect slaves. Saotome agrees saying that
Type-S addicts escape the real world and lose their
identity. He tells the Manticore that he wants more
addicts because they will work for him like slaves.
The Manticore asks Saotome if his purpose is to
remake human society. Yoji unable to wait any longer
demands that Saotome give him more Type-S. Saotome
tells him to forget what he has seen, Yoji
agrees.

Yoji is telling the Rie he envisions in his mind that
she is his alone. He is saying this because Rie has
acquired a boyfriend in both his game and in the real
world. The game is asking him if he wishes to trash
her boyfriend, with the qualifier that he must
restart the game from a beginner level (whatever that
means). Yoji chooses to trash the boyfriend. After
putting three more drops of Type-S in the flame he
begins to daydream. The dream starts with Rie and her
boyfriend holding hands, then the boyfriend is
whisked away. When he disappears Rie's clothing
changes to her waitress outfit. Rie's appearance
changes once again as her clothing falls away to
reveal the swim-suit that Yoji had her wear in the
game. Yoji tells her that she knows what to do.
Sounding demure she tells him
you told me to wear this.

Rie is standing in front of her boyfriend with her
jacket held wide, she is wearing her waitress garb.
For Yoji this is the worst possible turn of events as
she is telling her boyfriend what she tells Yoji in
his dreams,

Looking on with growing horror, Yoji is trying to
understand how Rie's boyfriend continues to exist. He had
been trashed the night before in the game right?
Hoping that Type-S can help him with the situation
Yoji pulls out his flask. Fumbling he drops the bottle, its
contents spill across the pavement. After he drops
the bottle Yoji wishes that there were more people
who were addicted to Type-S. He takes it upon
himself to spread the word, but only to those who
have a bad attitude and can keep a secret.

unexpectedly he does not get a response. One gets to

with her homework. Yoji throws some more Type-S in
the flame. He tells the CG Rie to cross its legs.

Rie finally has had too much, tears herself from his
grasp, and darts from the room. Yoji tells the
retreating Rie
You can't run away from me! You'll always be right
in the palm of my hand.

saturates the area. A bank of computers boots
somewhere.

to find his computer unresponsive. Fearfully he
starts randomly hitting keys and clicking the mouse.
When nothing happens he starts to scream Rie's name.
Concerned, his father calls to him through the door
asking what is wrong. Yoji accuses Mr. Suganuma of
taking away Rie. Yoji father totally baffled, demands
that Yoji open his door. Yoji who has become silent
for a moment explodes, shouting
shut up
repeatedly. Moments later he starts to kick his door
telling his father to just disappear. Turning back to
his computer Yoji sees a very distorted image of the
CG Rie on his screen.
