Me and my dad were actually in an agreement about something today. We both said that looking in the mirror when backing up is more effective than looking over your shoulder. And backing up is one of the 2 reasons why I didn't get my liscence today >.<. Here's some of the reasons why it's more effective.

1. You have less of a blind spot when looking in a mirror than when you look over your shoulder, because what do you have behind you...a seat.

2. You don't have to deal with any chances of your neck hurting when you look in the mirrors.

Why can't DMVs see that it's actually more dangerous looking over your shoulder than when you look in the mirrors? I almost go hit by some vehicle (I didn't get a good look to see what it was) when pulling out of a parking space too.

Do you think this is true or not?

I mainly use the mirrors, but it's a good idea to occasionally look over BOTH shoulders when backing out of a space; neither your mirrors or looking over one shoulder will prevent you from hitting a car.

Technically, the mirror does have a larger blind spot since its field of vision extends mainly to the rear of the vehicle and not to its sides. When I took the test, all they cared about was an initial over-the-shoulder glance to check for other vehicles and then using the side mirrors to back the car out parallel to the curb.

It's a little harder when you're in an SUV. Otherwise over you shoulder may be a lot better. Yes...may be a lot better.
