I didn't see the first Saw movie, but I've heard something from both sides. I heard it was good and I heard it sucked. Which one is it?

I've seen some previews for Saw II on TV and it doesn't look half bad to me.

I saw like 30 min of the first and it was really cool.

I really liked the first one, I thought Phone Booth was kinda in the same vein too. It wasn't as gruesome as the trailer suggested though.
