Well, I went to see it yesterday with quite a few people (we took up a whole row o_O). I must say it was a lot of fun to watch and was extremely hilarious. You could easily tell it's a Tim Burton film without even having to see the opening credits. Danny Elfman does the music and it works well with the look of the movie. I think some fans of the original though might be turned away by the changes of the film. Like I said, I liked it a lot and I recommend it.

What were some of the differences from the original? The original movie has a special place in my heart and this new one doesn't seem to be much of a deviation.

Well one example would be the Willy Wonka character. Not saying the original wasn't a little unusual, but this one could easily be considered insane. Also, if I remember right, Depp based the look of the character off of Marilyn Manson (some were saying the Wonka character's actions were reminding them of Michael Jackson, which I don't agree with at all).
Also a different color scheme with more of a gloomy cartoonish look. The music seems a little less light hearted also (which you can tell in the intro).
I liked the original myself, but this is just a modern/strange retelling of it. For me, the original and this both stand alone even while being the same movie, if that made sense.

I saw it last week. It was pretty good in my opinion.
I saw the old one a long time ago, though I don't remember it that much.

But it's a classic! I'm not much on whimsical films, but the original had the right spirit.

I do remember the old Oompa Loompa songs, and I preffer them to the new.

Anyone here a fan of the book by Roald Dahl? (or at least read the book?)
Roald Dahl has always been one of my all time favorite authors. By the age of 8, I had read every one of his children's books. Where as my favorites are "Fantastic Mr. Fox" and "the Witches", "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" was no doubt one of his most memorable stories.
Anyway, I never was a big fan of the 1970s film, although it does have a lot of good merits. I admit I was quite sceptic about a remake (even though Tim Burton is one of my favorite directors). Turns out I was pleasantly surprised. Depp's take on his character is a bit creepy, but it's that little bit of creepyness that makes him both comical and a likable character. I'm glad they included the "nut room" this time around, as it was always my favorite scene in the book. I enjoyed Danny Elfman's score but as Silver mentioned the new Oompa Lumpa songs aren't as catchy as the old version's. I'm hoping that Tim Burton will make another movie based on the book's sequal, "Charlie and the Glass Elevator. So far I haven't heard anything....

If I remember right, in an interview with IGN he said he has no intentions of a sequel.

Oops, forgot to login.
Ah... that's too bad then. Not that I ever considered "Glass Elevator" a great book anyway. Fun to read, but by no means one of Dahl's best.

I read the book in 6th grade, though it's been a while, though not the sequel. Only other Dahl's book I read was Skin, which was pretty cool. Anyone hear of it?

I'm kinda embarrassed to admit that I've never actually read any of his books. :(

That seems to be part of his style; he was almost unrecognizable in Pirates of the Caribbean.

And Chris, how did I know that this would be on the forum? I'll tell you why. You won't shut up about it, but since this put on the forum the day after you saw it I have one thing to say about that. YOU SHOULD'VE TOOK ME ALONG, YOU KNOW I WANTED TO SEE IT.

Yep. That one was pretty cool. Shame how his short stories are always overshadowed by his childrens books (not that I don't enjoy them, too).

I rather enjoy Johnny Depp as an actor (or maybe I'm just a biased Tim Burton fan, who knows :P ) but I don't understand the worshipping he gets from obsessive fangirls who are a 1/3 of his age. And I still think Pirates of the caribbean was a bad movie regardless of who starred in it... Sorry, I'm really getting of on a tangent now, aren't I?

I didn't enjoy Pirates much either, but I do have enormous respect for Johnny Depp. I still think Gilbert Grape was his best role.
