Editor review

Don't follow the Yellow Brick Road, follow the Path Of Radiance.

The Fire Emblem series has been a great success for years. This game, Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance, is no exception. Path of Radiance is the 9th game of the Fire Emblem series, so you can easily tell that the series has come a long way.

The story is set on the continent of Tellius. From the allied land of Crimea to the enemy nation of Daein, you will fight in many different places.

The story starts off with a cut scene with the main character, Ike, training with his father so he can become a mercenary. Ike gets knocked out cold by his father and his sister, Mist, takes care of him. When Ike awakens, he hears Mist humming a tune that their deceased mother sang when they were younger. Ike then goes for another round against his father. But first another of the Greil mercenaries, Boyd, comes in to check up on them. Greil then tells Ike to spar with Boyd. That’s where the first battle comes in. It’s a very simple battle so there’s no need to worry. After the battle with Boyd and Greil, Ike will become a mercenary. In the second chapter of the game, the Greil mercenaries take on their first job. Ike will go with the deputy commander, Titiana, and two very useful companions, Oscar and Boyd. A few chapters later, Ike commands a mission that will set the stage for the rest of the story. The rest of the story is very interesting and has some surprising twists. There are a total of 30 chapters in the game so you’ll find out some interesting things.

Throughout the game you’ll meet many characters. Some are interesting and some you’ll be surprised that they joined your party. Some of those characters you find will be hard to get into your party, but if you figure out how to get them, they’ll be a great asset. But if you lose a character in battle, they won’t come back. There are also many different types of characters and almost all of them are able to change their class. This is done by leveling up a character to level 20 then gaining enough experience to go to the next level. That should be level 21, but to avoid confusion it just resets to level 1. The characters’ abilities will still be the same, just the class and level has changed. After you get to level 20 with an advanced class of character, he/she will not be able to receive any experience.

The battle system is pretty simplistic, but the game is more about strategy than the battle system. The creators have incorporated a “Weapon Triangle” and “Trinity Of Magic” into the game. The weapon triangle helps determine the outcome of a battle. It shows that swords are strong against axes, axes are strong against lances, and lances are strong against swords. The trinity of magic is the same thing except fire magic is strong against wind magic, wind magic is strong against lightning magic, and lightning magic is strong against fire magic. For each of the triangles, there’s one thing that was left out. For the weapon triangle, bows were left out. And for the trinity of magic, light magic was left out. This means that the triangles have no effect on bows and light magic.

The graphics in the game are pretty good. The anime style cut scenes are phenomenal and so are the graphics in the battle areas, but for most of the rest, I didn’t find them as well as they could have been. In the levels and cut scenes before the levels, there were problems with objects. At times the characters were bigger than the trees and sometimes you couldn’t even tell what it was supposed to be. There was one annoying thing I saw in the conversations. When there was a conversation, there would be absolutely no motion except for the characters blinking at random times. Sometimes their facial expression will change and sometimes the character will change direction, but that got irritating after a while.

A lot of the music in the game, in my mind, was well done. There were 63 different songs in the game, but some you’ll hear many times. There may be a lot of repetitive music, but the music still is very well done.

Highs: Great tactical gameplay, interesting story, wonderful anime cutscenes
Lows: Outdated graphics, battle system could have been more innovative
Bottom Line: Path Of Radiance is one of the best RPGs to come out for Gamecube. So my suggestion is to go and buy this game as soon as possible.
