The third already?

Megaman Battle Network is doing pretty good. A new year, a new game. With the success of the first two Megaman Battle Network games, Capcom has pleased most Megaman fans and has managed to keep their interest for a while. But is Capcom able to do this again? Especially with another MBN game, which, by the way doesn't really add anything new to the gameplay, visuals, audio or lasting appeal at all. The Net Mafia group Gospel has been destroyed, the land has been saved and Lan's life has returned to a peaceful state. Well, you can't really call it peaceful, since the villains of the WWW-oganization are causing trouble once again. This time, they are after the core of the net, called Alpha. It was once the start of the internet. Nearly every computer and network was adapted to it. But everything went wrong when Alpha started infecting all these computers with bugs. The officials were called in to stop it, and after much trouble, they managed to lock Alpha away. If Alpha is released now, with all the computers that are connected to the net, Alpha would disrupt and problably destroy the world economy, and maybe even more. Enough reason for Lan and his Navi Megaman to stop the WWW once and for all. Sounds corny? It does. But the vast amount of sidequests and subplots will make you forget the main plot for at least half the game. Visually nothing has changed in Megaman Battle Network 3. There are the same sort of models and animations. All looking colorful and lively. Megaman walks through a narrow-pathed net, with, sometimes psychedelic backgrounds. Some people will surely say this is a cheap way to create a game: not really changing anything about the graphics (or sounds for that matter), since it saves tons of time. But you can also think 'don't change what's is already right'. Unfortunately, the same goes for the sounds. Nearly nothing has changed, except fo the tunes of the new areas, but for the rest, which includes sound effects, everything is mostly the same as in the previous games. Obviously, you'll still control Lan in the main world and Megaman when walking through the net. You use chips that you pick from defeated enemies or find on the net, to battle the viruses and evil Navi's that roam the net. Chips vary from normal attacks like sword chips, to the better and more useful attacks, such as chips that summon other Navi's to attack for you, or chips that heal restore a big part of your HP. That two different games have been made, MBN3-blue and MBN3-white, is the consequence of the battle system and gameplay core. The fact that many players want to have the best chips requires them to collect the chips and search for them in a Pokemon-styled way. Gotta catch 'em all! Both games have the same storyline, but one different extra Navi that can be battled, and five chips that can be collected after the main game has been completed. There isn't much difference between the two games, and every player who has a some sense in him, will buy only one version, but you can't really blame Capcom for making two of these games. It worked with the Pokémon games, didn't it? This extraordinary battle system has worked two games long, and it will probably work a few more times, since every time new chips are added and thus new strategies can be created, but players might need some more variation to keep their attention. New in MBN3 is the possibility to fully modify your Navi. You can give it added strength, flexibility or endurance, and other programs that give your Navi certain advantages. The styles and elements a Navi can obtain have also been expanded. New are the Ground Style and the Shadow Style, available for one of the two versions only; Bug Style, Shield Style and Team Style are other new styles that can be obtained in this game. Although all of these enhancements and extra's are a nice welcome to the MBN series, in secret this game is not much better than an expansion. | |||||||||
